Are NHL Refs turning hockey into the NBA?

nhl_ref Last season, 11,540 penalties were called in the NHL. This year, as of October 20, 2011, we are on pace to hear 14,120 whistles. Why the sudden, dramatic increase?

The NHL doesn't post penalty stats on their website prior to the 1997-1998 season. However, it seems obvious to me (and many announcers for that matter) that too many inconsequential plays are being whistled. The refs have too much discretion and power in my opinion. This is hurting our game.

On the current course, we are better off picking teams with better special teams than rosters if we want to more accurately handicap hockey. PAT BANK'S LOCK 5*: Dallas Stars -110 Ducks are overplaying, Dallas is underplaying. Considering the Ducks are 8-20-1 in the last 29 meetings in Dallas, this is a perfect opportunity for them to both get back playing to their potential.

DOC'S SPORTS: 3-unit Play Take Dallas Stars/Anaheim Ducks UNDER 5.5 (8:35pm EST) If this game were played two weeks ago it would have had a completely different feel. The Ducks were in dead last in the conference and had very little hope for the playoffs back then. However, they are 8-0-1 in their last nine contests and have currently moved to within 11 points of 8th place in the West. The Dallas Stars have been struggling mightily of late losing six consecutive contests, and are now in 11th place in the conference but only four points away from the last playoff spot. With these teams going in opposite directions and both looking up at the playoffs right now, I feel like this game will have a lot of energy and have a playoff-like atmosphere especially considering this will be the fourth meeting of the season already for these two. As a result, I expect a good fundamentally-played tight matchup with few mistakes, which should keep scoring down. The last two meetings between these two saw the total go Over, but that's only because the goaltenders had poor efforts. There weren't many shots on goal in either game and if we can just get them to play an average game in net we should have no problem keeping the total below the number today.
